Xiamen-Xiang'an undersea tunnel, the first undersea tunnel in Chinese mainland is completed on Nov 5, 2009. It connects Xiamen Island to the mainland, the fifth channel after Xiamen Bridge, Haicang Bridge, Jimei Bridge and Xinglin Bridge. It reduces an hour and a half journey from Xiamen Island to Xiang'an area to eight minutes.

Xiamen-Xiang'an undersea tunnel is domestically designed and constructed. Starting four years ago, it is expected to serve for 100 years. The tunnel spans 8.7 kilometers, with two main lanes, each 17.2 meters in width, 12 meters high, and an alternative lane, reaching 70 meters under the sea level. Three trains can pass through the tunnel at the same time. Xiamen-Xiang'an undersea tunnel is a landmark in the exploration of our own underwater tunnel technology.
