China calls for facilitating youth political participation, improving their status and exercising their rights so as to promote common development, a Chinese senior official said on Tuesday.

Zhou Changkui, a senior official with the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) told a UN high-level meeting on youth which began on Monday.

"As youth is an important political force, facilitating youth in political participation symbolizes equality and progress of a society," he said. "Participation is a way for young people to improve their status, exercise their rights and promote common development."

China called on the international community to respond to new features of political awareness and ways of expression among young people, providing them more channels and options, such as virtual organizations and internet-based new media, Zhou said.

The two-day high-level meeting, which is focusing on the theme of "Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding," is devoted to tackling the challenges facing youth and exploring their potential to bring about change in their societies and in the world at large.

With regards to youth development in China, Zhou noted that the Chinese government has been formulating and implementing youth policies from a long-term and strategic perspective. "During the past 16 years following the adoption of the World Program of Action for Youth, the Chinese government has increased financial inputs in areas of education, employment, culture, health and etc., creating a more conducive environment for youth development," he said.

Zhou emphasized the importance of enhancing dialogue between various civilizations and asked the young people not only to absorb the spiritual essence of their nationalities and regions, but also contribute to dialogues among civilizations.

"As the pioneers of cultures, youth should contribute to the creation of a compatible, open and new youth culture, leading to a new era of cultural coexistence," he said.

In addition, the UN has greatly promoted the well-beings of the world youth as well as the betterment of youth policy. China supports the UN to continuously play an important role in promoting youth development, Zhou added.
