State Councilor Liu Yandong met Wednesday with a Patriotic Union of Kurdistan delegation headed by Hero Ibrahim Ahmed, wife of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

Liu hailed the bilateral ties between China and Iraq as well as the progress that Iraq has made in the reconstruction of the country.

"The Chinese and the Iraqi people enjoy a long history of friendship, and bilateral ties have been going smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic relations," Liu said.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan is an important political force in Iraq, said Liu, adding that "China is willing to make joint efforts with Iraq to advance pragmatic cooperation at various levels."

Ahmed, a senior official of Iraq's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, congratulated China on the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

She also pledged to work together with China to boost cooperation and step up the bilateral ties.
