China said Tuesday that a Chinese research ship passed Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) last week but didn't work there.

"A Chinese marine research vessel sailed through Japan's EEZ on June 23 toward high seas for scientific research," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular news briefing.

"No scientific survey was conducted there at all when the ship was sailing in the zone," Hong said, adding that the Chinese government has clarified the issue with Japan.

"Currently, the research vessel is working at certain high seas," said the spokesman.
