The Ecuadorian government on Tuesday expressed its solidarity with China over the flooding which has killed many people and left millions homeless in the southeastern part of the Asian country.

"Ecuador expresses its deepest sorrow for the loss of human lives and expresses its solidarity with the families and victims of the affected zones," Ecuador's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Ecuador expressed its solidarity with the inhabitants of Hubei, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Anhui and Zhejiang, which were the provinces most affected by some of the worst rains registered in China in 56 years.

The Chinese Civil Affairs Ministry said on Monday that the rains and flooding since June 3 have killed about 175 people and affected more than 36 million people.

Another 1.64 million people from 510 counties of 13 provinces have been left homeless while many are missing and feared dead. The direct economic loss caused by the floods has amounted to 35 billion yuan (5.41 billion U.S. dollars), said the ministry.
