The International Conference on Translating and Interpreting Education Development 2011 (CIUTI Forum 2011) was held at the prestigious Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) on May 21 and May 22. Some 300 experts and scholars from 18 countries and 38 member organizations, such as the United Nations, European Union, European Parliament as well as the CIUTI, gathered in Beijing to discuss issues such as translation and interpreting education and global sustainable development.

The forum this year, sponsored by CIUTI, BFSU, Translation Association of China (TAC) and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), aimed at facilitating communication between China and the world in translating and interpreting education to gradually establish the influence and academic status of BFSU's Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation

While addressing the opening ceremony, Shaaban M. Shaaban, Under-Secretary-General for the General Assembly and Conference Management, said that the number of translation professionals were much less than that those of MBA and computer professionals. Considering these circumstances, international organizations, academic circles as well as non-governmental organizations should establish close cooperation to address the shortage.

Li Zhaoxing, president of TAC, noted that as translation in China has gone global, translation and interpretation development in China should serve people in China and around the world. The development of translation and interpretation in China should focus on the promotion of the Chinese language in international affairs.

Established in 1951, CIUTI is an international organization specialized in promoting the development of global translation and interpretation education and professionals. BFSU's Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation was the first institution training professional interpreters and translators in China to join the CIUTI in May 2008. This is also the first time that the CIUTI Forum has been held in China.
