The 12th World Russian Conference kicked off in Shanghai on Wednesday at Shanghai International Studies University.

Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong addressed the opening ceremony. She said the opening of the conference shows the worldwide Russian academic circle's affirmation of the progress made by China in Russian language education and studies.

"It expresses the great importance that China's government attaches to Russian studies and the linguistic and cultural exchanges between China and other countries," said Liu.

The World Russian Conference is held every four years. After first being held in Moscow in 1969, the following ten conferences were hosted in various Russian and European cities.

Shanghai International Studies University and Chinese Russian-Education Research won the hosting rights in 2007 after competing with organizations from nine other countries, including Germany, Spain and India. This is the first time for the event to be held in China.

The conference attracts more than 1,000 linguists from 48 countries to come together to share ideas on Russian literature, culture and cross-cultural communication.
