The year 2009 marked the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and Malaysia. The traditional friendship between China and Malaysia grew stronger and their strategic cooperation was deepened.

The exchange of high-level visits was frequent. President Hu Jintao paid a state visit to Malaysia in November. During the visit, the leaders of the two countries reached broad agreement on intensifying China-Malaysia strategic cooperation under the new circumstances. The two sides signed several documents for cooperation in banking regulation, higher education, infrastructure construction and other fields. NPC Vice Chairman Li Jianguo visited Malaysia in March. Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia, paid an official visit to China in June and signed with the Chinese side the Joint Action Plan on China-Malaysia Strategic Cooperation. Liu Qi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Beijing CPC Committee, visited Malaysia in December.

There were noticeable achievements in economic, trade and financial cooperation between China and Malaysia. Malaysia was China's biggest trading partner among ASEAN countries. Joint construction of the Second Penang Bridge in Malaysia went ahead smoothly. The People's Bank of China and Bank Negara Malaysia signed a bilateral currency swap agreement involving RMB80 billion yuan in February. In November, Bank Negara Malaysia issued a business license to the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.

Cooperation in defense, culture, education and other fields continued to expand. General Dato' Sri Abdul Aziz, Chief of Army of Malaysia visited China in July. In the same month, China and Malaysia signed an agreement on setting up the first Confucius institute in Malaysia.
