Four chartered flights of China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines left Malta Wednesday, bringing home 998 more Chinese nationals evacuated from unrest-hit Libya.

The fourth plane carrying 216 evacuees took off from Malta International Airport late Wednesday, bringing the total number of Chinese nationals back home from Malta to 4,061.

The other three planes with 218, 284 and 280 evacuees on board flew to Shanghai earlier Wednesday, according to the Chinese Embassy in Malta.

Another three chartered flights are expected on Thursday, the embassy said.

A total of some 4,800 Chinese nationals have been evacuated from Libya to the Mediterranean island of Malta, by three chartered vessels since Feb. 26.
