Myanmar-Chinese community celebrates spring festival in Yangon

Hundreds of Myanmar-Chinese residing in Myanmar's former capital of Yangon gathered Thursday evening, the first day of the Chinese new calendar year, to express blessings for better prospects in the Year of Rabbit.

The festive function, sponsored by the Preparatory Committee for New Year Call representing different walks of life, was attached with cultural performance by a combined carol singing group.

The two-hour performance, featuring mainly dancing programs, won a wave of applause from the audiences.

According to the Chinese community sources, a local popular amateur music band, the Guangdong Music Band, is scheduled to hold an indoor music concert in the Chinatown on Saturday to present pop-music to audiences, especially the youth as in the previous years.

On Wednesday, the eve of the Chinese new year, a grand festive procession round the Yangon Chinatown by 14 lion and dragon dancing groups took place, sparking the lunar new year celebration in the former capital.

On Friday, the second day of the new year, Chinese traditional lion and dragon dance competitions will at the Chinatown, and the contest will last for four consecutive nights until Feb. 7.

The winners will repeat their performances on Feb. 8 in the prize presentation ceremony, also marking the end of the event, the organizer said.
