Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi extended condolences to his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd on Thursday over the floods in northeastern Australia.

China's Red Cross Society donated 50,000 U.S. dollars in cash as emergency aid to the Red Cross Society of Australia.

Northeastern Australia has suffered its worst flooding in decades and the high waters are continuing to cause chaos across the region. About 1,000 people in Queensland have been evacuated, including the entire population of the town of Theodore, according to reports.
