Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to Russia, Belarus, Finland and Sweden will be important for promoting cooperation with the four countries, said a Foreign Ministry spokesman Thursday.

"The visit is an important diplomatic action of China. China attaches high importance on relations with the four countries, and our relations with the four countries are developing smoothly," ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a regular press briefing.

He said Xi would meet with leaders of the four countries to discuss promoting bilateral relations and cooperation in such areas as finance, economy, energy and culture.

In Russia, he would attend the inauguration of the Year of Chinese Language, and the opening ceremony of the second round of dialogue between the Chinese and Russian ruling parties.

"The Year of Chinese Language will promote the mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and Russian people, which would also enhance the two countries' cultural cooperation," Qin said.

The visit will last from March 20 to 30. Xi is invited by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Belarusian President Alexander Kukashenko, Finnish President Tarja Halonen and Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.
