The opera "A Dream of Red Mansions" expressed the wish of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to further develop its friendship with China, the DPRK's official newspaper Rodong Sinmun said Wednesday.

An article in the daily spoke highly of the artistic level of the Korean opera, saying it reflected the Korean people's true feeling of treasuring the friendship with the Chinese people.

The opera, based on a Chinese masterpiece in the 18th century, was first staged in the DPRK in the 1960s. The Phibada (Blood of Sea) Opera Troupe recreated the opera this year for the DPRK-China Friendship Year.

DPRK top leader Kim Jong Il reportedly watched the rehearsal of the opera in March. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also watched it on Monday during his visit to Pyongyang, accompanied by Kim.
