The tour de force parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China has impressed many watching it in France.

The parade was "magnificent in that so many people were celebrating," said Yannick Benichou, a member of the France-China Friendship Association at ParisTech, told Xinhua.

"Since New China was founded in 1949, so many great events have taken place in the land," Benichou said.

Benichou studied at China's Tsinghua University for two years, and witnessed great changes in Beijing before returning to France in 2008.

"During the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, the world noted spectacular changes in China. But they don't know the country has been undergoing changes for years," he said in fluent Chinese.

"Oct. 1 is a grand festival for China," Dr. Pierre Picquart, a professor of geopolitics and a specialist on the Chinese diaspora at Paris University, told France 24 radio.

The past 60 years in China were a record of six decades' economic development, Picquart said.

The Chinese society was becoming more and more harmonious, democracy and social reform had advanced, and the environment had improved during these years, he added.

In an editorial on Saturday, French daily Le Monde said the spectacular military parade on Tiananmen Square provided the Chinese people with reasons to be proud.

During the military parade, fifty kinds of China's homemade weapons were displayed for the first time, the editorial said.

The modernization of the People's Liberation Army was based on the concept of "active defense" for now, it noted.

China, no longer restrained within the traditional fronts, was participating in multinational operations to maintain world peace under the leadership of the United Nations, the editorial said.
