China on Friday said it welcomed the British strategy document detailing an approach for bilateral relations.
"The document fully indicates the importance attached by Britain to its relationship with China, and also shows the great potential in bilateral cooperation," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in response to a question.
The document, entitled "UK and China: A framework for engagement," was posted on the website of the British Foreign Office. Building a progressive, comprehensive relationship with China will be a "major priority" in the years ahead, according to the government document.
"We also notice that the document was released a few days before Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Britain," Jiang said. This is the first time Britain has issued a strategy document on relations with China.
To advance the friendly cooperation in various areas between China and Britain, both countries of important influence, accords with the fundamental interests of the two peoples, and also helps world peace and development, she noted.
Jiang said China valued relations with Britain, and was ready to increase communication and exchanges with the European nation on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits, in a bid to push forward the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership.
Confronted with the current situation, China and Britain should work together to deepen cooperation and jointly deal with difficulties, so as to contribute to promoting the early recovery of the world economy, she said.
