The new director of Chinese Foreign Ministry's information department has been named as Ma Zhaoxu, former director of the ministry's policy planning department.

Ma, born in 1963, served as counselor to the United Kingdom, Belgium and the mission to the European Communities successively from 2001 to 2004, and became head of the policy planning department in 2006.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Thursday Ma succeeded former head of the information department Liu Jianchao.

No information was released about when Ma would debut as a Foreign Ministry spokesman

Liu was known for his sedate and humorous style in briefing reporters on China's foreign affairs.

"I should watch out for not only who are raising their hands, but also who are untying their shoelaces," Liu said when asked to comment on a reporter who threw his shoes at U.S. President George W. Bush in the Middle East last month.
