11:08, August 08, 2008

A senior Chinese official said here on Thursday that China would expand friendly exchanges and cooperation with Saudi Arabia.

Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks in a meeting with the Secretary-General of Saudi Arabia's National Security Council, Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, who arrived in Beijing on Thursday afternoon for the Olympic Games.

Applauding Saudi Arabia's support for the Games, Zhou, also the secretary of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee of the CPC Central Committee, expressed gratitude for the friendly assistance from Saudi Arabia after the May 12 earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Zhou noted that the top leaders of both nations paid successful visits to each other's country in 2006, which lifted bilateral relations to the height of strategic friendship.

China was ready to work with Saudi Arabia to conduct friendly exchanges at various levels, deepen cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, energy, culture, education and security, and strengthen coordination on major international issues, to push forward the growth of China-Saudi Arabia relations, Zhou said.

Bandar spoke highly of China's great achievement in its reform and opening-up process, saying that Saudi Arabia would strengthen its friendly strategic and cooperative relations with China.
