A leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) called on European Parliament party groups to play a bigger role in promoting China-EU political mutual trust and cooperation on Monday.

Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said in a meeting with a delegation from the European People's Party and European Democrats (EPP-ED) led by chairman Joseph Daul.

EPP-ED is the largest group in the European Parliament.

China and the EU face wide common interests and challenges, and enjoy great potential of further cooperation. Their joint efforts would play a crucial role in world peace, stability and development, Li said.

China always view and handle the relations with EU from a strategic and long-term perspective and would like to work with the EU to enrich the comprehensive partnership and raise ties to a higher level, Li said.

Citing party-to-party exchanges as an important part of China-EU relations, Li said the CPC would like to conduct exchanges with the EPP-ED and other groups in the European Parliament.

During the one-hour meeting, Li also briefed the European guests with facts and figures elaborating Chinese government's great efforts on promoting economic and social development in Tibet, preserving its culture and tradition, as well as improving education and living conditions for Tibetan people.

Due to these efforts, Tibet has witnessed an all-round development of politics, economy, society and culture. Culture in Tibet has entered a prosperous period of remarkable development, Li said.

The policy of the central government toward the Dalai Lama has been consistent and the door of dialogue has remained open, which depends on whether the Dalai Lama has the sincerity, Li said.

Daul said that frank talks helped him know the reality in China and particularly in Tibet.

Daul praised China's achievements and suggested the EU and China further strengthen exchanges and cooperation in order to jointly handle new challenges faced by all human beings.

Daul also extended condolence to victims and their families in a fatal train collision on Monday morning in east China's Shandong Province which left 70 dead and 416 injured.

Wang Jiarui, head of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met with the delegation on Tuesday morning.
