Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, kicked off a campaign on Monday to recruit 12 volunteers to work in hospitals, schools and to train athletes in Seychelles.

They are among 300 volunteers China promised to dispatch to African countries in three years at the milestone China-Africa summit in 2006.

The group to be selected includes seven doctors and nurses, two music teachers, a Chinese teacher and ping pong and gymnastics coaches, said Xie Tianwen, the Communist Youth League of China Guangzhou committee vice secretary.

Volunteers should be between 20 to 35 with an educational background of bachelor's degree or higher, Xie said.

They will leave for the Indian Ocean island nation next month when the first group of 10 medical staff and teachers finish one year of service.

The ten volunteers had conducted more than 600 medical operations, treated 13,700 patients, and trained musical and tourism students in the islands over the past year.

Xie explained the two sports instructors were being added this year to help improve the Seychelles' athletic capacity.

China pledged to strengthen China-Africa cooperation at the Beijing Summit. The country plans to train 15,000 African professionals and send 100 senior agricultural experts to Africa.
