Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in Washington Monday with the European Union (EU) High Representative for European Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana to discuss China-EU relations and exchange views on international and regional issues of mutual concern.

Yang is here to attend the Middle East peace conference scheduled to open in Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday.

Both sides praised the development of China-EU relations, saying that relations between China and the EU has maintained a positive momentum of development.

The 10th China-EU Leaders' Meeting will be held on Nov. 28 in Beijing. Both sides hoped this meeting will help further consolidate and broaden the all-round strategic partnership between China and the EU.

The Chinese foreign minister also said he hoped that the EU will work together with China to make more efforts to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and in the Asian Pacific region.

Solana reiterated EU's stance on the "one-China" policy.

On Iran's nuclear issue, Yang said the Chinese side praises and supports the EU's diplomatic efforts to solve Iran's nuclear issue and to resume negotiations.

The Chinese side is willing to maintain close communication and coordinate with all sides concerned on Iran's nuclear issue and play a constructive role in finally solving the issue through a peaceful manner.

Solana said the EU will continue to make unswerving efforts to promote the solution to Iran's nuclear issue.
