China Netcom, one of the leading telecommunication service providers in China, opened its European operation here on Thursday, to offer extended service to its customers who are "going international" in large number.
"As one of the largest telecom providers, China Netcom's European arm will be a window for future cooperation with our European partners with whom we could offer better service to our traditional customers," said Zhao Jidong, senior vice president of China Netcom group.
China Netcom's presence in Europe, Zhao said, will not pose as a competitor, but rather as a cooperator to European telecom service providers, with whom the Chinese company has worked for nearly one century.
As one of China's big four telecom service providers, China Netcom, is now one of the official partners with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, it has been in touch with British telecom service providers in the past two years over technology and information exchange on Olympic Games service.
The fact that Beijing and London will host the 2008 and 2012 Olympic games respectively, is proving to be yet another factor that links China Netcom and London, home for its European branch, Zhao said.
China Netcom has been listed on the New York and Hong Kong stock exchanges since 2004, offering its subscribers a wide range of fixed-line telecom and data services, including fixed-line telephone services as well as Personal Handyphone System, consisting of local, domestic and international long distance services, broadband and other internet-related services.
Before its European branch in London, China Netcom has established its branches in Hong Kong, the U.S., Frankfurt and Japan.
