2011 is the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, and Red Tourism is experiencing an unprecedented boom period. Many people want to "feel" China's history and raise their level of knowledge by visiting revolutionary sites.

Red Tourism is a subset of tourism in China in which Chinese people visit revolutionary sites with historical significance.

A national Red Tourism work meeting was held in Beijing on June 15, where the successful experiences of flourishing Red Tourism sites were summed up and the work for Red Tourism development in the next five years was also fully deployed.

Liu Yunshan, member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the meeting.

Red Tourism sites received nearly 1.4 billion tourists in the past six years

Since the first-phase project was implemented six years ago, Red Tourism in China has received nearly 1.4 billion tourists in total, according to Zhu Zhixin, director of the National Red Tourism Coordination Group.

In 2010, Red Tourism received 430 million tourists in total, accounting for 20 percent of all domestic tourists of the same year. In the same year, Red Tourism also created 912,000 direct jobs and more than 3.7 million indirect jobs. Though several museums, memorials and patriotic education sites were free of charge, the total income from Red Tourism in 2010 still reached 130.2 billion yuan. Red Tourism has become an important part and a pillar of China's tourism business and brought in good political, social and economic benefits.

Under great support from the country, the old revolutionary base areas have completed 127 Red Tourism highway projects with a total length of 3,418 kilometers, successively accomplished the construction or reconstruction projects of many key Red Tourism airports including the Baise Airport, Jinggangshan Mountain Airport and Huai'an Airport, and built 106 railway stations in the past six years.

In the past six years, China also allocated 8 billion yuan of Red Tourism special construction funds in total. Local areas made remarkable progress in revolutionary historic cultural heritage protection, construction of infrastructural facilities of scenic sites and other aspects. Their exhibition levels, revolutionary site protection abilities, service levels and receiving capacities have all improved significantly.

Red cultural products a feast for the eyes

The enthusiasm of people participating in the Red Tourism has grown since the implementation of the first stage of planning. The source of tourists for Red Tourism scenic spots has gradually transformed from group tourism to both group tourism and individual tourism. Meanwhile, the reputation of Red Tourism scenic spots and of visitors' sense of identity is also rising.

The development of Red Tourism has given Red Culture popular support. Red Tourism scenic spots in various places has further explored the cultural connotation and created popular red cultural products that reflect the core values of socialism. Red Tourism scenic spots such as Xibaipo, Jinggangshan, Yan'an, Longyan, Linyi and Zunyi also established red stages to perform red shows for visitors. Performances such as "Jinggangshan" and "Dreaming Yan'an Defense Battle" are well received by visitors with their strong interaction.

Meanwhile, the development of Red Tourism also brought about a huge population flow, logistics flow, information flow and capital flow to the old revolutionary base areas. Locals actively participated in the development of Red Tourism and developed Red Tourism commodities and services to effectively expand employment, increase their incomes and promote the harmonious development of the economy and society in old revolutionary base areas.

Paying attention to historical, cultural heritage

The second phase of the plan to enrich Red Tourism content still focuses on the content related to China's revolutionary and wartime period, use patriotism and traditional revolutionary spirits revealed in China since 1840 as themes and includes historical and cultural heritage of representative events and figures into the scope of Red Tourism.

Hu Chengjun, deputy head of the office of the National Red Tourism Coordination Group, said the significance of expanding Red Tourism content lies in that it will benefit the inheritance of advanced culture and outstanding traditional spirit of the Chinese nation, help to make Red Tourism more consistent with the times and reality, further explore valuable spiritual wealth of Red Tourism and enrich the essence of Red Tourism.

The second phase of the plan includes targets for the development of Red Tourism over the next five years. Red Tourism around the country will grow considerably during the12th Five-Year Plan period.

It is expected that the number of visitors related to Red Tourism will exceed 800 million in 2015, representing an average annual growth rate of 15 percent and accounting for a quarter of the country's total. The comprehensive revenue of the Red Tourism sector will top 200 billion yuan, an average annual growth rate of 10 percent. The sector will directly create 500,000 new job opportunities and indirectly create 2 million new job opportunities.
