The continuous drought since March this year shrunk habitat of aquatic wildlife in Yangtze River Valley and triggered an ecological crisis. A large amount of wildlife have already died off, and aquatic mammals face especially serious threats, according to news from China's National Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Association.

The Yangtze Valley is an important habitat for numerous endangered aquatic wildlife. The aquatic wildlife under first-grade state protection in the Yangtze Valley accounts for one half of the total quantity of national aquatic wildlife in freshwater.

Reduced water and the falling water level in rivers and lakes have a more serious effect on rare animals, such as the Yangtze finless porpoise, causing the rare aquatic wildlife to be easily stranded, accidentally injured or killed. Hence, an emergency first aid system is needed to be set up to rescue aquatic wildlife in danger, one expert said.
