A forum was held in Beijing Thursday to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the birth of the late Kuomintang (KMT) general, Zhang Xueliang.

Li Wuwei, vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, attended the forum.

Li gave a speech at the forum, calling for more efforts to promote Zhang's patriotism as well as his spirit in maintaining the Chinese nation's unification.

"We should further strengthen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, and make contributions to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations," Li said.

Known in China as the "Young Marshal", Zhang was famous for the Xi'an Incident of Dec. 12, 1936 when he and General Yang Hucheng took Chiang Kai-shek hostage, demanding he stop the civil war and unite with the Communist Party of China in the war against Japanese aggression.

Zhang was born in 1901 and died in 2001.

More than 300 people from both within the country and overseas attended the forum.
