The Beijing municipal government received nearly 15,600 applications for its limited social work positions as of 8 p.m. on March 24, the first day of the application period.

There are 15 candidates applying for every one position that is available, which means the social work examinations are even more competitive than the Beijing civil service examinations, the application period of which ended 12 days before.

Beijing plans to recruit 1,000 college graduates to do social work in communities this year, with exams for the first time open to non-recent graduates. In addition, social workers will be given permanent residency in the city if they can pass employee evaluations for two straight years.

Last year, 13,701 applications were submitted for 3,000 social work positions in Beijing, and one out of less than five candidates were hired. The selection ratio of the 2011 Beijing civil service examinations reached 1:13, which meant social work jobs for the first time surpassed civil service jobs in popularity.

The future distribution plan of social workers for each district and county was also published on the Beijing Personnel Testing Authority's official website on March 24. Xicheng and Changping districts will both hire 150 workers, followed by 100 in Dongcheng District, 90 in Huairou District, 73 in Daxing District, 72 in Fangshan District, 70 in Yanqing District, 48 in Haidian District, 20 in Chaoyang District, and 10 in Shijingshan District. The suburbs have greater demand for social workers than the city proper.
