Although China has made remarkable achievements in desertification prevention and control in recent years, it still needs 300 years to complete the current desertification treatment due to the overall slow progress, said Zhu Lieke, deputy director of the State Forestry Administration (SFA).

Zhu said that the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council attach great importance to the work of desertification prevention and control, and they have made remarkable achievements. The area of China's desert lands continues to decrease. However, the work of desertification prevention and control is still facing serious challenges.

China has more than 1.7 million square kilometers of desertified land, and it needs about 300 years to complete the treatment on the 530,000 square kilometers of desertified land in accordance with the present speed.

The conflicts between population growth, economic development and ecological carrying capacity are still great, and there is still a huge gap between capital investments in the desertification prevention and control and the actual needs. Accelerating desertification prevention and control relies heavily on the government's leadership and actively mobilizing social participation.
