Over 110,000 Chinese awarded for voluntary blood donation

The Ministry of Health, the Red Cross Society of China and the Medical Department of the General Logistics Department held the 2008-2009 national voluntary blood donation commendation ceremony in Beijing on Feb. 22, and more than 110,000 blood donors won the "Dedication Award for Voluntary Blood Donation."

Han Qide, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), attended the meeting.

In addition, there are 80 units and 13 individuals who won the "Voluntary Blood Donation Promotion Award," 9 provinces and 240 cities were named "Voluntary Blood Donation Advanced Provinces (municipalities)." In addition, 616 individuals were commended at the meeting for voluntarily donating hematopoietic stem cells.

Health Minister Chen Zhu said that since the Blood Donation Law was implemented 12 years ago, the national voluntary blood donation work has developed considerably. The proportion of blood for clinical use coming from voluntary unpaid blood donation rose from 5 percent in 1998 to 99 percent in 2009.
