As the Internet brings convenience to consumers, it seems to have caused a new type of disease among them.

According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, 71 percent of 2,580 respondents thought they had "online shopping addiction," of which 25.6 percent thought they were seriously addicted, and 45.5 percent said they were "somewhat addicted."

Asked about major symptoms of online shopping addiction, about 74 percent of the surveyed said they "could not help browsing shopping websites,” followed by "always pay attention to discount information online" (60.1 percent).

On their opinions about "online shopping addiction," nearly 60 percent surveyed said it was "understandable," 53.9 percent said it was "an expression of dependency on Internet," 33.6 percent regard it as "an expression of strong desire to consume," while 27.0 percent think this is "a morbid mentality that needs to be adjusted."

Ma Mouchao at the Chinese Academy of Sciences said "online shopping addiction" has deviated from the original purpose, turning shopping to a behavior to satisfy one's psychological needs since indulging in shopping brings excitement and satisfaction.

Tao Ran, head of the Internet addiction treatment center at Beijing Military General Hospital, said the number of people seeking for treatment of "online shopping addiction" has been growing since March 2010. Many of them are serious online shopping addicts.

Tao said most online shopping addicts just have a tendency to develop the disease. But without enough attention, this can lead to serious psychological problems and behavioral disorders.

Tao said females more easily develop the addiction. Those who often feel lonely and depressed and have problems coping with negative emotions are prone to become online shopping addicts.

Tao suggested those who are likely to get addicted should go out for relaxation or do some physical exercises when they feel alone in order to discharge negative emotions.
