As of the end of 2010, China has 457 million Internet users, an increase of 73.3 million year on year and the Internet penetration rate rose to 34.3 percent, 5.4 percentage points higher than the previous year, according to statistics released by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) on Jan. 19.

Meanwhile, mobile Internet, microblogs and group purchase are also rapidly emerging. Internet has become an important force for boosting the development of economy and society.

Internet feeds traditional industries

If the past decade is the decade when the traditional industries supported the development of the Internet, then the next decade will become a decade when Internet nurtures the traditional industries, said Lv Benfu, vice president of the graduate school of management of Chinese Academy of Sciences, during the annual conference on China’s Internet industry held on Jan. 18.

Taobao, the largest e-commerce trading platform in China, is an example of this phenomenon. The registered members neared 200 million and the annual trading volume exceeded 200 billion yuan. Around 1 million people opened shops on Taobao, which drove logistics, payments, marketing and other sections of the industrial chain.

The CNNIC statistics show nearly 100 percent of large-scale enterprises can access the Internet and 93 percent of SMEs can do this. More than 40 percent of enterprises have their own websites, and e-mail has become the most popular means of Internet marketing.

With the integration of information and industrialization as well as the advancement of research in the Internet of Things and cloud computing, the Internet industry has strengthened its role in traditional industries.

"This not only has promoted the development of the Internet itself but also has promoted economic restructuring and social development," said Xi Guohua, vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
