Having undergone the hardships of low temperature and ultraviolet rays, Chinese expedition team successfully returned to the Jihai Tower on the south bank of Lake Qinghai from Haixin Mountain around 3 p.m. on Jan. 23. This was the first time that China has finished the ice expedition on Lake Qinghai and also was the first well-organized and planned expedition on frozen Lake Qinghai.

On the evening of Jan. 22, having settled in the temporary tents on Haixin Mountain, all members of the expedition team endured the severe test of strong winds, extreme low temperature of some 30 degree Celsius below zero and fatigue from a long, arduous journey.

After a severe night of temperatures of 30 degree Celsius below zero, a lot of photographers, with their cameras ready, got up early to capture the enchanting scenery of the lake despite of the wintry morning chill. Around 8 a.m. on Jan. 23, all the team members came out to breathe the fresh air. Some 30 minutes later, logistic staff had the breakfast ready.

Members formed a snake-shaped team and started their expedition at 9 a.m. Thanks to two days of clear weather, the lake looked serene and clear. The ice surface was divided into various geometric shapes. But team members suffered from the ultraviolet rays due to the sunshine. Almost all their noses turned red despite outdoor equipment.

Some team members suffered physical exhaustion two days into the expedition, but the majority still remain full of energy. With a total time of four hours and 30 minutes, the first team member arrived at the south bank of the Lake Qignhai at 2:20 p.m. Around 4 p.m., all members arrived at the south bank and finished the expedition.

Members tightly embraced the one who was the last one to arrive at the south bank. One team member said he had never thought that he could take part in the expedition and felt excited and honored. Other members highly praised the beautiful scenery of Lake Qinghai and the charm of the expedition.

All the members returned to their encampment in Heimahe after rest. The organizing committee held a celebration to mark the success of the ice expedition across Lake Qinghai in the evening.
