The sales of welfare lottery tickets in China this year totaled 90.4 billion yuan as of Dec. 12, 2010, an increase of 14.7 billion yuan from the last year. The lottery has raised some 28.3 billion yuan for public welfare, 15 percent more than the annual public welfare fund last year, the China Welfare Lottery Issuance and Management Centre reported on Dec. 12.

Half of the 28.3 billion yuan in the public welfare fund will be turned over to central finance for national social security, the disabled, Red Cross, rural medical aid, construction of youth education bases and big sport events. The other half will be used for social welfare and public causes, such as caring for the old, helping the disabled, aiding orphans, providing for the needy and disaster relief.
