Two people were killed and four injured in a fireworks explosion at an illegal fireworks workshop in east China's Shandong Province Monday afternoon, local authorities said.

Two people died on the scene when the fireworks exploded at 3:40 p.m. at a villager's house in Dizangsi Village, Xiajin County of Dezhou City, according to a statement released by the municipal government.

The injured have been rushed to hospital and are in stable condition, officials said.

Initial investigation showed that the blast might have been caused by sparks from old electrical wires. Officials said the house was used for illegally producing firecrackers.
