China's first group of aid workers ended their mission in this inundated Pakistan region Tuesday, after treating more than 11,000 patients and earning the gratitude of residents and officials.

During the three-week stay, the Chinese team braved abominable working and living conditions; demonstrated love, compassion, professionalism and responsibility; and added a new annotation to the deep traditional Chinese-Pakistani friendship, said Huang Jianfa, head of the 55-member unit.

Statistics showed that, till noon Tuesday, 11,222 people had been treated at the mobile hospital established by the Chinese team, the first foreign aid group to reach Thatta region, which was the worst hit area in Pakistan's recent nationwide flooding.

In consideration of the religious traditions in local communities, 14 women doctors and nurses were included in the Chinese team. This proved a positive move as most of those seeking medical assistance were women and children.

"Whether the patients are rich or poor, men or women, we respect all of them. I believe that this message of friendship will be passed to every corner of Pakistan," Wang Qian, a doctor in the team, told Xinhua before departing for China.

"All the hard work is nothing," said Xue Chao, a member of the team's logistics unit. "What is important is that we can ensure that the aid team complete its tasks smoothly. We feel so proud."

The helping hands from China were highly acclaimed by the Pakistani government and military as well as the local residents. A string of senior figures, including Tariq Majid, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, have visited the Chinese aid workers and lauded their selfless and efficient efforts.

The team's timely help "reflects the strong friendship between Pakistan and China," Majid said during a visit to the mobile hospital earlier this month. "At difficult times, the two countries always stand together."

In a show of their gratitude, many local inhabitants brought food, water, medicine and other supplies to the Chinese team, revealing a bond that transcends the linguistic barrier and physical boundaries between the two countries.

"Maybe we cannot remember all of your names, but what you have done in Pakistan will always be kept in the hearts of the Pakistani people," said a Pakistani liaison officer at the farewell party.

The second Chinese aid team, consisting of 59 members, left for Pakistan earlier Tuesday to continue the humanitarian mission. Meanwhile, a Chinese military medical unit is about to head for the flood-stricken neighboring country to offer help, according to Chinese Ambassador Liu Jian.

China has so far offered Pakistan a total of 320 million yuan (some 47 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian supplies in response to the worst flooding in Pakistan's history, which has killed at least 1,700 people and affected more than 20 million others.
