Chinese pharmaceutical companies and research institutions have jointly launched a program to research and develop traditional Chinese medicine to fight super bacteria, according to China's Ministry of Health.

The partnership, which is headed by Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings, Ltd. and the South China Center for Innovative Pharmaceuticals (SCCIP), hopes to achieve substantive results in five years.

Those in the medical profession generally believe that the overuse of antibiotics is the key reason why super bacteria are produced. China is one of the places in the world where antibiotics abuse is the most serious. The overall resistance of bacteria is much higher than developed countries.

An official with China's State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine said that traditional Chinese medicine has its own advantages in terms of antibacterial and antiviral properties, so it is a good breakthrough point for research and development of the new cures for so-called super bugs by combining Chinese and Western medicine.
