China's Central Meteorological Center (CMC) said Saturday heavy rains were making a return to the country's northeastern regions after several days of respite.

The meteorological agency issued a second most urgent alert Saturday warning the northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning were expecting heavy rains or rainstorms until Sunday.

Since June, rain-triggered floods had left 85 people dead and 67 others missing in Jilin as of Aug.10, according to the local flood control authorities.

Provinces and regions including Sichuan, Shaanxi, Shandong, and Yunnan would also see downpours until Sunday.

The observatory warned local authorities in those areas to guard against mud flows, landslides, and flooding.

Meanwhile, China's southern regions are being baked. The highest temperature in Shanghai, according to forecast, will reach almost 40 degrees Celsius Saturday.

Chongqing city and parts of Zhejiang Province are also to see maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Saturday, according to the CMC forecast.
