A hostage was rescued Wednesday afternoon in Beijing and her kidnapper seized by the police, municipal police said.

The suspect surnamed Zhang, who was in his twenties and claimed to have come from east China's Shandong Province, took a waitress hostage with an imitation gun in a spa club room in Beijing's Chaoyang District at 2:30 p.m., said a Beijing police spokesman

Police took the suspect by surprise, safely rescuing the hostage at around 5:00 p.m. by breaking into the spa club room through both the door and the window, he said.

The police are further investigating the case, he added.
