The government of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) announced on Monday the establishment of a government spokesperson office, which is part of the local government's effort to better its communication with the public.

According to the chief executive instruction promulgated on the Official Gazette, the spokesperson office has responsibility for drafting the government's information policy, ensuring the smooth communication among various government departments, and promoting the government's relations with the media and the public.

The office, which directly reports to the SAR's chief executive, will be headed by the government spokesperson, the appointment of which was yet to be announced by the SAR government.

Before the establishment of the spokesperson mechanism, the SAR government releases the information concerning its policies and activities mainly through its Information Bureau.

The Information Bureau will support the new spokesperson mechanism by providing internal training for the relevant officials, said Chan Chi Ping, director of the Information Bureau.
