An officially-designated gay bar in Dali, southwestern Yunnan Province was supposed to open Tuesday on World AIDS Day, but it was delayed due to public pressure, according to its manager Zhang Jianbo.

"The bar will open, but maybe later. We are under a lot of pressure now and should eliminate the negative effect first. The other reason about the bar’s delay is the over exposure of the bar which makes gay people afraid to come in," said Zhang.

According to previous media reports, the bar for gays was financed with public funds to the tune of 120,000 yuan ($17,576) from the Dali Prefecture government, and managed by The Good Friend Center, a non-governmental organization for homosexuals.
However, Zhang denied this rumor. According to Li Jun, director of the Health Department of Dali, it was the Dali Association of Aids Prevention and Health Promotion that financed the bar.

Zhang said the bar can also be used as a 'common room for partner education' for the gay community, as part of the official initiative to break the social stigma against gay men. The supposed opening of the bar comes days after Health Minister Chen Zhu warned that homosexual sex has become a main factor in the spread of AIDS in the country.
