China's railway transportation operation has been managed in order during the travel peak in the nation's eight days National Day holiday, said the Ministry of Railway Thursday.

Railways carried 5.97 million passengers on Wednesday, and 54.5 million during Oct. 1-7, according to the ministry.

The country's transportation department has added 284 trains on Wednesday to cope with the transport boom as more people made journey back home.

He Jianzhong, Ministry of Transport spokesman, said on Sept. 28 that 488 million journeys would be made via road transport from Oct. 1 to 8, up 6.8 percent over the same period last year.

The holiday, running from Oct.1-8, was extended by one day this year as the Mid-Autumn festival fell in the period.
