A car crash killed one person and injured 12 others, two severely, in a neighborhood in Shanghai Friday, local police and witnesses said.
Witnesses said the accident took place at about 8 a.m. in a neighborhood in Linyi Road of Pudong New District, when a car suddenly lost control and swerved around madly.
Altogether 13 people were run down, mostly senior citizens who were en route to a nearby vegetable market, witnesses said.
The dead is a 56-year-old woman. The oldest of the injured was87 and the youngest was an infant, local police said.
The injured are being treated at local hospitals, mostly suffering bone fractures, police said.
An initial investigation shows that the car driver attempted to press on the brake but mistakenly stepped on the accelerator while encountering an emergency.
The case is being further investigated, police said.
