Electricity consumption in Beijing set a record Friday as the city sweltered in heat wave.

The power grid reported a peak 14.246 million kilowatts of electricity consumption as of 12:36 a.m., the highest in history, said Niu Jincang, a spokesman with the Beijing Electric Power Company, under the State Grid.

The figure exceeded the previous record of 13.38 million kw seen Thursday, Niu said.

The summer peak was 12.56 million kw last year, he said.

Beijing has experienced scorching weather this week, with daily maximum temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius.
