The two moderate earthquakes that successively jolted two close-by areas in Taiwan Sunday were irrelevant to the 7.3-magnitude quake that hit the same region ten years ago, Taiwan seismological authorities said.

The authorities said the two fresh quakes were independent ones caused by extrusion of tectonic plates.

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit east Taiwan at 2:10 p.m. Sunday (Beijing time), just five hours after an exactly same strong earthquake hit almost the same region at 9:00 a.m., according to the China National Seismological Network.

So far, no casualty had been reported.

Despite that, locals in central Taiwan's Nantou County, near epicenter of the 9 a.m. earthquake, said they were worried due to unpleasant memories about the strong earthquake on Sept. 21, 1999, that killed nearly 1,000 people in the county. The earthquake killed 2,378 people in total.

A woman surnamed Chen, who lives in a town of Nantou, said Sunday's earthquake was different from the others frequently felt in the county as it was near the epicenter.

"When I learnt this, the sad memories ten years ago immediately came to my mind," she said.

Epicenter of the Sunday afternoon quake is 9 km deep. It is located at 23.4 degrees north latitude and 121.4 degrees east longitude, about 65 km away from Hualien County in east Taiwan, 75 km from Taitung County and 180 km from Taipei.

Epicenter of the morning quake is 6 km deep and is located at 23.7 degrees north latitude and 121.0 degrees east longitude, about 40 km away from Nantou County and 160 km from Taipei.
