Three non-local persons who were suspicious of drug trafficking in three separate cases have been arrested in Macao, the Macao Daily Times reported on Monday.

There were "strong signs" showing the non-local suspects' involvements in drug trafficking and thus the judge ordered an immediate transfer of the suspects to the prison where they await their trials, the daily quoted a press statement from the Prosecution Office (MP) of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) as saying.

In the first case, the 28-year-old female surnamed Lao, who was a resident of Hong Kong SAR, was arrested by the Macao SAR Customs while entering Macao on April 4 for allegedly possessing 21 grams of ketamine inside her under-garment, according to the daily.

The second case involves a 36-year-old suspect from Guinea who was apprehended by the police over two kilograms of heroin in his luggage when he arrived from Malaysia on April 4.

The third suspect was a 29-year-old from Gambia who ingested wrapped heroin in order to avoid police detection when he arrived at the Macao airport from Thailand on April 7. He later excreted 100 oval-shaped wrapped heroin with a total weight of 1.28 kilograms at a local hospital.

The drug trafficking problem has become more and more evident in Macao in recent years, as a total of 263 suspected drug cases were reported merely in last year, a year-on-year increase of 68 percent based on the yearly average of about 160 drug cases during the past seven years, according to the figures from the MP.

SAR's Chief Public Prosecutor Ho Chiu Meng has said that the SAR is facing a major drug-fighting challenge that it has never faced before, and more effective measures should be taken to curb the rising numbers of drug-related crimes.
