An investigation into a sudden death in prison on March 31 had been launched on April 3 in Foshan City in south China's Guangdong Province, said the provincial procuratorate on Thursday.

Liu Yushan, male, died suddenly in Gaoming Prison in Gaoming District of Foshan, said a procuratorate spokesman.

The prison claimed that the death might be related to heart attack while Liu's relatives said they suspected Liu was beaten to death as they found many injuries on Liu's body on April 1 in the funeral home, the spokesman said.

An investigation team of members from both the provincial procuratorate and the Gaoming District procuratorate was founded on April 3. Investigation had been launched on the same day, the spokesman said.

"The conclusion had not been worked out as the body has not been dissected yet," the spokesman said, without giving more details.

More evidence was expected to be collected, the spokesman said.
