Chinese police have detained a man who held a woman at southwest China's Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport on Thursday, airport police said Friday.

The incident occurred at about 9:20 p.m. near the security counter, when a man fired two shots into the air with a starting pistol and grabbed a woman and rushed to the No.4 security channel.

Airport police and security guards overpowered the man quickly and freed the woman, who had no injuries.

Police said Jiang Jun, 23, bought the starting pistol and blanks online. The pistol still contained three blanks when it was seized.

Police said they were questioning Jiang and were yet to establish if he knew the woman.
