The comprehensive social security assistance caseload fell to 284,500 cases involving 476, 155 recipients in January in Hong Kong, down 0.02 percent on December in 2008, Hong Kong Social Welfare Department said on Wednesday.

The department said the jobless cases rose 0.01 percent to 31, 775, while single-parent and low-earning cases fell 0.04 percent and 1 percent to 36,179 and 15,914.

Permanent-disability cases rose 0.2 percent to 17,823 in Hong Kong, according to the statistics released by the department.
