China cracks down on obscene videos spread through mobile phones

Five ministries, including the Ministry of Public Security, jointly issued a circular deciding to organize a special campaign, which will last from now to middle April, against illegal and criminal activities concerning the spread of obscene videos through mobile phones.

This special campaign will focus on spreading of obscene videos via mobile phones and portable game players, notably downloading obscene videos from the Internet and saving them on memory cards for mobile phones and MP3 and MP4 players. The key locations to be investigated include mobile phone shops and secondhand cellphone vendors that provide online download services for mobile devices.

Public security authorities will reinforce regulations of locations like mobile phone shops and audio and video shops in accordance with relevant laws and improve their monitoring of websites which provide access to obscene and pornographic videos.

Cooperating with communication administrative authorities, they will further strengthen routine monitoring and management of the Internet and direct Internet service providers to fully assume their responsibilities on information security management.

Administration systems and measures of relevent authority departments will also be improved, in order to strengthen their inspection and disposal of various types of illegal and harmful online information and to strictly crack down on the activities of producing, selling and spreading obscene products.
