Although the financial crisis is spreading worldwide, the spending of Shanghai residents has not been severely affected. Statistics released on January 21 show that Shanghai's consumer market had an upward trend in 2008, up by nearly 18 percent year-on-year.

The data also show that the income of urban and rural residents in Shanghai continued to have stable growth in 2008. The average disposable income per capita for urban and rural families reached 26,675 yuan and 11,385 yuan respectively, up by 12.9 percent and by 11.4 percent year-on-year.
