China will give priority this year to water conservancy construction to deal with water conservation problems that are of the utmost concern to the general public and that are having the most direct and real effect on the people, according to Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources.

This year, China will address the drinking water safety problems for 60 million people, make concerted efforts to complete transformation of 20 to 30 large irrigation areas and add 3 million kilowatts per year to hydroelectric power generation capacity in rural areas.
