Three Gorges Project to be completed this year |

The construction of the Three Gorges Project will be finished in 2009 after 16 years of work according to the initial design, it was revealed at the Resettlement Work Conference for the Three Gorges Project, held on January 14 in Beijing. The planning and arranging of subsequent works will also be carried out. All long-term projects such as those for migrants to steadily settle down and seek their fortunes and works targeted at developing and protecting the ecological environment will be fully carried out too.
In 2009, the goals of preliminary designing and constructing the Three Gorges Project and of relocating and settling migrants will both be completely finished. 3.3 billion yuan will be invested into the main dam project this year. The construction of the underground power station and the ship elevator will continue non stop and the column of the ship lift chamber will be cast to a height of 158 meters. 4.5 billion yuan will be invested into a project involving power transmission and transformation, while 9.7 billion yuan will be allocated for the migration project. As of the end of December 2008, total dynamic investment in the Three Gorges Project had reached 181.5 billion yuan, which converts into 122.9 billion yuan of static investment, accounting for 91% of the financial estimate orginally approved by the state.
